International Interdisciplinary conference
on
Sustainable Technologies for Environmental
Protection
ICSTEP2006

This
conference was organized as a part of the Golden jubilee
Celebrations of the institution during 7-9th , January
2006. Nature in the service of man being the motto of our
institution, it is relevant that we organize this conference in
tune with our ideas. The objectives of this programme are to
provide a major interdisciplinary forum for presenting new
approaches in niche areas of environmental science and technology,
to foster integration of the latest developments in scientific
research into engineering applications, and to facilitate
technology transfer from well tested ideas to practical products
and remedial processes.
As an effective
prelude to the conference, on 6th , January, 2006, two
preconference workshops Understanding air quality modeling
by Dr.Ashok kumar, Professor and Chair of Department of Civil
Engineering, College of Engineering, University of Toledo, USA,
Convenor & Technical Chair of the conference, Environmental
Management-An Executive Overeview by Dr.Ram Ramanan , Exon
mobile limited & FullBright Scholar to IIT Bombay respectively
were organised. The participants were from industries, Academic
Institutions and research organizations. Dr.Ragavan Ramanan
distributed certificates to the participants
The
technical programme of the conference had three components viz.
oral presen tation,
poster presentation and panel discussion. There were 120 oral
presentations, 35 poster presentations and 18 virtual
presentations in the proceedings. Renowned environmental experts
from the global arena in the technical committee provided support
to the organizers in the scrutiny and selection of abstracts and
papers. The conference was inaugurated by Dr.D.Viswanathan,
Vice Chancellor, Anna University, Chennai on 7th,
January, 2006.
The plenary lectures were delivered by five of the technical
committee members: Dr.Ashok Kumar on Examination of
Application issues related to the air quality models for urban
areas; Dr.Ajit. P. Annachatre on POPs:How well they are
managed in Developing Countries?; Dr.Harvey Huang on Hazardous
waste Management in Taiwan; Dr.Pascale Champane on Bio
Ethanol from agricultural waste residues; Dr.Joon Ha Kim on Ecocomplexity,
Uncertainty, and Optimisation of Ecosystem by Environmental
Systems Engineering Approaches.
The delegates from various parts of India and from USA, Thailand,
Taiwan, Korea, United Kingdom, Canada, Netherlands, Australia and
Denmark participated in the conference. The topics discussed in
the conference were trendy and multidisciplinary. The delegates
were enlightened with the panel discussion held on the evening of
first day of the conference, the 7th of January 2006.
The chairman Dr.S.R.K.Prasad, Director, Coimbatore Institute of
Technology, Coimbatore led the discussions and the co chairman
Dr.R.Prabhakar, Principal, Coimbatore Institute of Technology,
Coimbatore summarized and concluded the discussions. The
topics on global warming, ozone depletion and biodiesel were
discussed with the experts forming two panels. The delegates
showed keen interest and took part actively in the discussion. The
conference went on fruitfully and ended successfully with the
valedictory function on 9th January 2006 and the
valedictory address was given by Dr.C.Ramasamy, Vice
Chancellor, Tamilnadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore.
The cash prize of Rs.5000/ and Rs.2000/- with citations for best
two oral presentations and best two professional posters
respectively were awarded. The first best paper was awarded to
Mr.Gareth davis, Lake Environmental Ltd , Canada for the paper The
need for Air Dispersion Modelling and the second best paper
award had been given to Dr.V.Kirubhakaran, National Institute of
Technology, Trichy for his paper Environmental Impacts of
Poultry Litter Disposal and Sustainable Technology for Energy
Production. The first best poster award went to
Dr.U.G.Sawaiker, Goa Engineering College, Farmagudi for his poster
on Wastewater treatment using UASB Process and the second
best poster presentation was awarded to Mr.Parth Shukla, EIRA
Division, National Environmental Research Institute, Nagpur for
his poster on Hydrocarbon and Heavy Metal Distribution in
Marine Fishes in the West Coast offshore Oil and Gas Development
Region.
An exhibition of the products of leading companies dealing with
environmental monitoring equipment namely Chemito Technologies Pvt
Ltd, Chennai , Nevco Engineers Pvt Ltd, Chennai, Miclins India,
Chennai and Orbit technologies Pvt Ltd, Hyderabad was also
arranged at the venue to benefit the delegates.

possible publication of the papers presented at the conference.
The authors have been requested to visit the websites of the
respective journals, modify and submit the full length papers
according to their guidelines.
