INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY
NATIONAL WORKSHOP ON WIRELESS AND
SENSOR NETWORKS
Jan 20 – 21,
2006
A two day National Workshop on “Wireless and Sensor Networks “ was
conducted by the Department of Electrical and Electronics
Engineering, Coimbatore Institute of Technology, Coimbatore
jointly with AU-KBC Research Centre, Chennai and the Industry
Institute Partnership Cell (IIPC), CIT, during January 20 and 21
2006 The focus of the Workshop was on the developments related to
the emerging Wireless technologies such as IEEE 802.11 Wi-Fi
systems, IEEE 802.16 Wi-max systems and the challenges and issues
in Wireless Sensor Networks.

The inaugural function was held on 20th January 2006,
with Er. E. Shajahan, General Manager, Bharat Sanchar Nigam
Limited (BSNL), as the Chief Guest. Our Principal Dr. R. Prabhakar,
in his presidential address emphasized the need for rural
connectivity and mentioned that such workshops can lead to
achieving this goal. In his Inaugural address, Er. E. Shajahan
explained the importance of broadband connectivity and mentioned
that BSNL aims to provide maximum connectivity at cheaper cost
using Broadband. He also highlighted the flexibility, economic
viability and efficient performance provided by Wireless Local
Area Networks (WLANs) in his address. Dr. R. Jayaparvathy, the
Principal Co-ordinator, provided an overview of the Workshop.
Prof. E. Ramaswamy, Administrative Officer, CIT and Dr. K.
Subramanian, Co-ordinator, IIPC and Head, Department of Civil
Engineering, CIT offered felicitations. Mr. C. Vivekanandan, Co-oordinator,
proposed the vote of thanks.
The Workshop was attended by students and Faculty from many
academic institutions. The number of participants for the Workshop
was 75. Technical lectures were delivered by experts from Brovis
Networks, Atheros Communications, and AU-KBC Research Centre,
Chennai. Practical demonstrations as part of the lectures was the
highlight of the Workshop. The first expert lecture was delivered
by Dr. S. Srikanth, Scientist, AU-KBC Research Centre, Chennai
providing an overview of the IEEE 802.11 and IEEE 802.16. His
lecture also covered the physical layer aspects of IEEE 802.11
WLANs. This was followed by a demonstration of WLAN traffic
sniffing by Dr. S. Srikanth and Mr. S. Satish, of AU-KBC Research
Centre. Day one concluded with an overview of the IEEE 802.11
Media Access Control layer by Dr. R. Jayaparvathy, CIT.
It was a good start on day two when Mr. Ganges Morekonda,
Director, Brovis
Networks delivered a lecture on the key aspects
of the IEEE 802.16 Wi-max. His lecture gave a clear comparison of
Wi–max and Wi-Fi systems and addressed the applications of Wi-Max.
The next session was on Quality of Service Provisioning in IEEE
802.11 by Mr. Vasudevan Raman of Atheros Communications, Chennai.
Issues and challenges in sensor networks was discussed by Mr. K.
Ramakrishnan of Cognizant Technology Solutions, Chennai. The
speaker also dicussed the hardware architecture for sensor network
implementation. The Workshop concluded with the valedictory
address and distribution of certificates to the participants by
Dr. P. Anbalagan, Professor and Head, Department of Electrical and
Electronics Engineering, CIT.
This Workshop coordinated by Dr. R. Jayaparvathy, Mr.
C.Vivekanandan, Faculty, Department of Electrical and Electronics
Engineering, CIT and Dr. S.Srikanth, AU-KBC Research Centre,
Chennai provided a platform to the participants to discuss the
emerging trends in the Wireless arena. |
