ON
PROTECTIVE COATINGS FOR ENHANCING DURABILITY
OF
STRUCTURES – PROCEDOS -2009
A one day
National Workshop on
“PROTECTIVE COATINGS FOR ENHANCING DURABILITY OF STRUCTURES”
was conducted at Coimbatore Institute of Technology on 31st
July, 2009. This workshop, jointly organized by C.I.T.,
Coimbatore and Dr.FIXIT Institute, Mumbai, with a view to
discuss the basics of corrosion, effects of corrosion in
concrete structures and various methods of controlling
corrosion including surface coatings in order to make concrete
structures more durable.
More than 85 delegates from different organizations like TWAD
board, Faculty members, Research Scholars, postgraduate and
undergraduate students from various Engineering Institutions
participated in the workshop. Dr.E.B.Perumal Pillai,
Dr.K.Subramanian from CIT, Mr.T.P.Banerjee, Mr.Nitin Tawde
from Dr.FIXIT Institute,Mumbai and Er.P.Srinivasan Additional
Director from Structural Engineering Research Centre (SERC),
Chennai were the resource persons who delivered lectures on
various themes of the workshop.
The
inaugural function started at 9.30 am in the A.C. Conference
hall. It had a divine beginning with the lighting of
Kutthuvilakku by the dignitaries. Er.G.Mounaswamy, President
of Coimbatore Civil Engineers Association (COCENA) was the
Chief Guest for the function. In his address, the chief guest
shared his views about the current scenario of the Civil
Engineering field and elaborated the opportunities available
for civil engineers, and also stressed that site engineers and
effective supervision play vital role in sustaining quality in
any civil engineering project. He also gave a brief
description of the causes that led to the accident in the DMRT
Project, New Delhi. He emphasized that “A good quality work
cannot be produced with poor quality materials but poor
quality work can come out with good quality materials ”.
Being the President of the Coimbatore Civil Engineers
Association (COCENA), he highlighted the various norms and
achievements of the Association.
Earlier Dr.K.Subramanian, Professor and Head of
Civil Engineering Department welcomed the gathering.
Dr.E.B.Perumal Pillai, Organizing Secretary of the workshop
and Professor of Civil Engineering presented a brief overview
of the workshop. Dr.V.Selladurai, Principal of Coimbatore
Institute of Technology presided over the function and
highlighted in his address the marvels of innovations in the
field of structural engineering. Dr.R.Prabhakar, Secretary of
CIT Institutions and Emeritus Professor and Mr.T.P.Banerjee
from Dr.FIXIT institute were the guests of honour and
delivered felicitation speeches. The proceedings of the
workshop in the form of CD was released by the Chief Guest.
Finally, Dr.S.Keerthinarayana, Professor of Civil Engineering
proposed the vote of thanks.
