 Two days faculty development programme on “OPEN SOURCE & OPEN STANDARDS BASED IBM TECHNOLOGIES” was conducted during 7th and 8th of October, 2005.

  • Open Source and Open Standards: 

Open Source is source of material (software & Hardware) which is open to the users. Open Standards are publicly available specifications for achieving a specific task. By allowing anyone to obtain and implement the standard, they can increase compatibility between various hardware and software components, since anyone with the necessary technical know-how and resources can build products that work together with those of the other vendors that base their designs on the standard .Open standards which can be implemented by anyone, without royalties or other restrictions, are sometimes referred to as open formats. 

  •   DB2 Universal Database: 

DB2 Universal Database is a web-enabled relational database management system that supports data warehousing and transaction processing. It can be held from hand-held computers to single processors to clusters of computers and is multimedia-capable with image, audio, video and text support. DB2 is optimized for each platform to maximize performance.

  •   Eclipse:

Eclipse is an open source software development project dedicated to providing a robust, full-featured, commercial-quality, industry platform for the development of highly integrated tools. It is composed of three projects, the Eclipse Project, the Eclipse Tools Project and the Eclipse Technology Project.

  •   Web sphere:

Web Sphere is Internet infrastructure software - known as middleware. It enables companies to develop, deploy and integrate next-generation e-business applications, such as those for business-to-business e-commerce, and supports business applications from simple Web publishing through enterprise-scale transaction processing. Web Sphere transforms the way businesses manage customer, partner, and employee relationships.

  •  Glue code:

Gluecode is an application server based on Geronimo code, maintained by Gluecode Software, Inc., which has been acquired by IBM. IBM offers Gluecode to it's customers, as an inexpensive alternative to Websphere, and sells support services for the product as well.

  • Cloudscape:

Cloudscape (now open sourced as Apache Derby) is a pure, open source-based Java Relational Database Management System that can be embedded in Java programs and used for online transaction processing (OLTP). A platform-independent, small-footprint (2MB) database, Cloudscape integrates tightly with any Java-based solution.
