One-day workshop on
Water Resources -
Present & Future scenario in India
6th March 2006
Dept of Civil Engineering

India depends on
monsoons for its water resources as well as economical well being.
India receives 90% of rainfall during 5 rainy days in a year,
unlike other countries. Hence, water management is essential both
during drought years as well as in excess rainfall years. Flood
damage in economy is enormous. The present and future scenario
requires large dams, inter connecting of river basins and pollution
control in our river systems. Further, already constructed
dams are experiencing loss of reservoir capacity due to
sedimentation. Utilization of existing hydel potential is also
essential.
Workshop deliberated
hydro powder development and construction aspects in hydel
projects, sediment removal techniques, and the importance of inter
linking of rivers, and creation of additional storage capacity by
construction of new dams.
The pollution levels in the
existing river systems are continuously increasing, slowly and
steadily making the surface waters unfit for normal use. Hence, there
is an urgent need to concentrate on water resources to protect
them and manage them for sustainable use.
