One Day Workshop on
Environmental Chemistry and
Pollution control - Some Recent Aspects
on

As a part of Golden
Jubilee Celebrations of the Institute, the Department of Chemistry organised one day workshop on
"Environmental Chemistry and
Pollution Control - some recent aspects", on 18th March 2006.
The main objective of
the workshop is to stress the urgency in preserving the ecological
balance and mitigate harmful pollutants at their sources itself in
order to provide a green and healthier environment.
About 60 participants
including staff members from various educational institutions,
research scholars, post-graduate science and engineering students
and industrial personnel participated in the one day workshop.
Dr. R. Krishnamoorthy,
formerly Dean (Agriculture) of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University,
Coimbatore delivered the key note address on "Environmental
Quality" and explained the imminent need for preserving the
environment and how to monitor the various environmental factors
and keep them under check.
Dr. A. Ragupathy, the
pesticide Toxicologist, in his topic "Pesticides and Environment"
explained how the soil and water resources are getting contaminated
with excess of pesticides and on the adequate measures to
be taken to reduce pesticide toxicology.
In his speech on "Heavy
metal Pollution and Remediation" Dr. S. Mahimai Raja, Professor of
Environmental Science of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University,
Coimbatore highlighted the various sources of heavy metal
pollution, their causes and how to manage heavy metal hazardous
wastes from the environment.
Dr. J. Chitdeswari,
Associate professor of Soil science, Tamil Nadu Agricultural
University, Coimbatore impressed the audience in her topic on '
Waste Management for sustainable environment", elaborating the
methods of managing solid wastes and ways for a safer and
sustainable environment and ecology for a healthy life.
Dr. M. Palanivelu,
Professor, Department of Environmental Science of PSG College of
Arts and Science, Coimbatore participated in the valedictory
function and distributed certificates to the participants of the
one day workshop. He also delivered his valedictory lecture on "
Pollution control legislation for clean and green environment" and
gave a clear picture of the need for strict enforcement of law and
suitable legislation for a safer environment.
Overall, the one day
workshop was purposeful and comprehensive enough to allow the
participants of the workshop to conceive the various concepts for
a meaningful assessment of environmental impacts.
