One-day workshop at CIT
The department of Mathematics of Coimbatore Institute of
Technology organized a one day workshop on “Stochastic modeling in
system Engineering” on 10th march 2006.

The success of the workshop is evident by the
participation of 90 faculty members and researchers from a
spectrum of Engineering, Arts and Science colleges all over South
India. Prof. M.Devaraju, Head of the department of Mathematics
welcomed the gathering and Dr.K.S.Ramaswami gave the overview of
the workshop. Dr.P.V.Arunachalam, the renowned Mathematician and
former vice chancellor of Dravidian University Andhra Pradesh
inaugurated the workshop.
In his inaugural address, Dr.P.V.Arunachalam said
“System Engineering” originates from the concept of using
knowledge from several sources for solving the problem and acts as
a medium between scientific solution and social or physical need.
It differs from other Engineering streams in the sense that it
relies on Mathematics (deterministic / stochastic) to express
knowledge. It provides solutions to cost effective, efficient and
reliable system design leading to cutting edge solutions.
In the special address Dr.S.R.K.Prasad, Director CIT
stressed the need for initiating thinking process that leads to
innovation and creativity which are the keys for success.
In the presidential address Dr.R.Prabhakar, Principal
appreciated the organizing of such workshops that will lead to
more research activities, which are the signs of growth of any
institution.
The invited expert speakers Dr.S.K.S.Srinivsan, Professor Emeritus
IIT-Madras, Dr.P.R.Parthasarathy, Professor IIT-Madras, Dr.A.Krishnamoorthy, professor, CUSAT, Kochi and
Cdr.Ramachandran
from Bangalore have enlightened the gatherings on such topics as
stochastic modeling applied to inventory control, stochastic
modeling applied to Queueing theroy, stochastic modeling applied
to Reliability, stochastic modeling applied to flight management.
In the evening a panel discussion chaired by Dr.S.R.K. Prasad and
Dr. R.Prabhakar was held giving directions for further trends of
research in the applications of stochastic modeling to virus/warm
attacks on computers, to Nano-technology and bio-informatics with
panel members Dr.S.K.S.Srinivsan, Dr.P.R.Parthasarathy, Cdr. Ramachandran, Dr. Renganathan, Dr. Gururajan, Dr.V.Selladurai, and
Dr.K.S.Ramaswami. Dr.S.Somasundaram the other organizer proposed
the vote of thanks. The participants gave satisfying and
commendable feedback comments making the session a grand success.
