DYNAMICS AND NON-DESTRUCTIVE TESTING OF STRUCTURES

Vibration of structures may occur due to natural calamities like earthquake, wind and flood. Also ageing of civil infrastructure and rehabilitation of damaged structures are becoming critical issues. These require an accurate analysis of civil engineering system which can be achieved only through static and dynamic testing on existing structures.

Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) can be performed to predict the properties of materials in structures with minimum cost and at the same time, leave the structures undamaged. Commonly adopted NDT methods have sound scientific basis. It has the ability to determine the strength and durability of critical construction without damaging them and the tests can be carried out on the site. These methods are used to estimate the strength, uniformity, homogeneity of concrete, to assess the quality control, to monitor changes in the structures. Hence periodical maintenance and required repair work can be done in time.

The workshop discussed various NDT methods and dynamic testing on structures. Demonstration of NDT equipment was also arranged. About 150 participants including practicing engineers, faculty members and students were benefited.

The workshop was inaugurated by Dr.K. Muthumani, Deputy Director, Structural Engineering Research Centre, Chennai and he also delivered a lecture on “Dynamic and vibration Techniques”. A special lecture on “NDT methods and its applications” was delivered by Dr.N.Ganesan, Professor and Head of Civil Engineering, National Institute of Technology, Calicut. The chairman of the workshop Dr.K.Subramanian covered “Dynamics of structures” and the co-ordinator, Dr.V.G. Srisanthi delivered on “Vibration Control Systems and Testing of Two Bay Five Storey RC Frame Under Dynamic Loading”. NDT equipment including PUNDIT, Rebound Hammer, Winsor pin system etc., were demonstrated by Mr.M.P. Muthuraj. The valedictory address was given by Mr. Muralidharan of  Dr. FIXIT Institute, Mumbai.
