In commemoration of the Golden Jubilee Celebrations of the Coimbatore Institute of Technology (1956-2006) one of the prestigious Engineering colleges in the state, a National Workshop on “Energy Conservation- Socio Economic Issues in Rural Electrification” was organized by the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering on 7-8 July 2006. 

   The main aim of the workshop is to create the awareness amongst the young engineers about the need for energy conservation in the next generation says Dr.S.Vasantharathna and Smt.J.Devishree who coordinated the workshop.

     In the Presidential Address, Dr.R.Prabhakar, Principal ,CIT emphasized the importance of Rural Electrification and  the Challenges and Issues in implementing the same. 

      In the Inaugural Address, Dr.P.Anbalagan, elaborated the electricity and energy scenario in India.  He also compared the conventional and renewable energy sources in India. He also reviewed our President of India Dr.A.P.J.Abdul kalam’ s view about the 11th five year plan.

    Ms. M. Sundarambal, Faculty in EEE welcomed the delegates.

 

   

   Dr. Ashok Rao, Director, Sahyadri Energy Systems, Bangalore elaborately delivered an unique lecture on Renewable Energy Concepts, Perception and Practice carried out globally and how in India it is been perceived and practiced. 

    He also highlighted that Tamil Nadu has taken a lead in Renewable Energy of Wind and Solar.  He emphasized on the Solar Thermal and Solar Photo Voltaic Systems and how consumer products can be developed with the solar energy.

 

 

   

    Dr. S. Velumani, Department of Physics, ITESM – Campus Monterrey.

   Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico delivered  a lecture on Fuel Cells and Solar Cells. In this Nano Era, Solar cells manufacturing is a challenging situation.  In America, Fuel Cells play a vital role.

 

 

 

   

    Dr. Punith Singh, Chief Design Engineer, exhaustively explained the unique design of “Pumps as Turbines” used along with small hydro projects which was his Ph.D.  research work completed at University of Karlsruhe, Germany.

    He also elaborated the need of bypass for the small 5 KW micro hydel turbine plants designed, installed and commissioned at various rural projects in Orissa, Indonesia, Darjeeling etc., 

 

 

   

     Er. C.V. Subramanian, Principal Consultant, Consultants Consortium Corporation discussed on the energy conservation and the need of the number of  stars that is awarded by Energy Conservation Authority for energy saving products manufactured. He also emphasized that standard consumer products are to be used.

 

 

 

   

    Dr. Sasi. K. Kottayil, Professor, EEE department, Amrita School of Engineering, Amrita Vishwa Vidhyapeetham delivered a lecture on Energy Economics.  

   In his lecture, he discussed about the profits gained through using renewable energy consumer appliances like solar water heater, solar drier etc.. He also broadly discussed about the small and large wind mill construction and operation.

 

 

 

   

    Dr. Mounaguruswamy, Retired Chief Engineer , TNEB and presently the Director, Power Sys roof,  discussed about the functional operation of the wind mills.

   He elaborated the practical issues and operational problems faced by the state Electricity board utility.

 

 

 

 

 

     Dr. Vasantharathna and Smt. J. Devishree coordinated the workshop activities.

   The highlight of the workshop is to introduce about the activities of  Society of Energy Engineers and Managers. (SEEM)

    It was witnessed by 100 delegates from all parts of the state.
