The conference was inaugurated on 27th June 2006 at 9.00 am by the Chief Guest Professor Alain SPALANZANI, Vice President, University of Pierre Mendes- France. He addressed the gathering about the present and future of global manufacturing and the importance of  innovations in the field of mechanical engineering. He also pointed out the conjunction with manufacturing globalisation, strategic alliance, and supply networking, information and cyber technologies are changing manufacturing beyond traditional country and company boundaries. Dr. S.R.K.Prasad, Director, Coimbatore Institute of Technology stressed the need of automation in industries to meet out the global standards. He urged the academicians, practicing engineers and research scientists to think towards cutting edge technologies needed to shape the modern industrial world.

There were five key note addresses by the eminent people from various countries. Professor Zhongsheng  Hua, Chairman, Dept. of Information Management & Decision Sciences, School of Business, University of Science and Technology of China, P.R. China. addressed on the topic “Process flexibility considering Bill of Material”. Professor Dr. Ing emer MARTIN BANTEL, Mechanical Engineer, Gorch-Fock strafe Deutschland / Germany. focused on “Creation of Creativity”. Dr. Adam  J. Sulkowski, Assistant Professor of Business Law, Charlton College of Business, University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth, North Dartmouth, USA delivered the keynote address on “Triple Bottom Line Reporting: Why We Should All Pay Attention”. Dr.Seshadri S. Ramkumar, Assistant Professor, TIEHH, Texas Tech University, USA delivered the keynote address on “Value Added No woven Manufacturing: Opportunities and Potential”. Professor Angappa Gunasekaran, Professor of Operations Management, Department of Management, Charlton College of Business, University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth, North Dartmouth, USA gave a key note lecture onLean and Responsive Supply Chain”.

A panel discussion was conducted on 27th July 2006 between 6.00 to 7.30 pm. based on the theme “Digital factories in 21st century ”, Chaired by Dr. S. R. K. Prasad, Director and Co-chaired by Dr. R. Prabhakar Principal, Coimbatore Institute of Technology, Coimbatore, with 10 eminent personalities. There were discussions about the development of digital factories in India and the latest technology adaptation for the improvement of processes of Indian industries to achieve the global quality products. The delegates also interacted with the panel members. The issues raised by the delegates were well discussed and it is more useful for the scholars, practicing engineers and students to think about the future of digitization in Indian industries.  Dr. R. Prabhakar, Co-Chairman of the panel discussion summarized the definition of digital factory and new ideas and thought provoking suggestions from the panel discussion to adopt the digital techniques in all of the activities like Supply Chain Management, Design, Manufacturing, Inspection, Quality Improvement, Packaging, Sales and Service etc., Finally Dr.S.R.K. Prasad, Chairman of panel discussion consolidated the discussion of the eminent speakers about the 21st century digital factories.

            There were two hundred and eighty eight  research papers presented in twenty eight technical sessions organised in four parallel streams under 28 different areas.  There were about 300 delegates who attended the conference covering participation from industries, R&D establishments and academic institutions.

The valedictory function was held on 29th July 2006, at 4.00 pm. The valedictory address was delivered by Thiru. S.K. Prabhakar, IAS, Commissioner of Technical Education, Chennai – 600 025. He stressed the importance of the theme of the conference for the present scenario. He also mentioned the qualities required to become a leader. One paper on best research and one best application research paper were selected as best papers by the technical committee and awarded with cash prizes and certificates.
