CONFERENCE REPORT

The conference was inaugurated on 10th February 2006 at 9.00 am by the Chief Guest Dr. M.Chidambaram, Director, National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirapalli and addressed the gathering about the fundamentals and developments in control systems at par with modern flexible technology. He also mentioned that educational institutions should keep the environment ready for industries in tune with the latest developments. Dr. S.R.K.Prasad, Director, Coimbatore Institute of Technology stressed the need of automation in industries to meet out the global standards. He urged the academics, practicing engineers and research scientists to think towards cutting edge technologies needed to shape the modern industrial world.

There were three key note addresses by the eminent people from academia and industry. Dr. Kannan Moudgalya, Professor, Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai addressed on the topic “Digital Controller: Design them form scratch”. Dr. C.P.Ravikumar, Senior Technologist, Texas Instruments, Bangalore focused on “New trends in ASIC design”. Dr. V.Radhakrishnan, Director – Research, Amritha Deemed University delivered the keynote address on “Automation – Its philosophy and its implications”.   

A panel discussion was conducted on 10th February 2006 between 5.30 to 7.30 pm. based on the theme “Mile stones and challenges in Intelligent Control”, Chaired by Dr. S. R. K. Prasad, Director and Dr. R.  Prabhakar Principal, Coimbatore Institute of Technology,  Coimbatore,  with the eminent personalities Dr.  M.  Chidambaram, Director, National Institute of  Technology,  Tiruchirapallai, Dr.  Kannan Moudgalya, Professor,  Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai,        Dr. S. Subramanyan, Former Vice Chancellor, Bharathiar University, Coimbatore, Dr. B. Ilango, Former Vice Chancellor, Bharathiar University, Coimbatore, Dr. V.Selladurai, Honorary Secretary, Institution of Engineers(India), Coimbatore  Local Center, Dr. P. Anbalagan, professor and Head of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Coimbatore Institute of Technology, Coimbatore, Dr. C. P. Ravikumar, Senior Technologist, Texas Instruments, Bangalore and  Dr. T. N. Sivakumar, Industrialist, Electronics and Controls Corporation Limited, Peelamedu, Coimbatore. There were discussions about internet based control and automation for energy saving in industries and nanotechnologies for the improvement of human life. The delegates also interacted with the panel members. The issues raised by the delegates were well discussed and it is more useful for the scholars, practicing engineers and students to think about the futuristic technologies.  Dr. R.Prabhakar, Co-Chairman of the panel discussion summarized the new ideas and thought provoking suggestions from the panel discussion to improve the research direction.

There were ninety three research papers presented in fifteen technical sessions organised in three parallel streams under the areas of Artificial Intelligence, Bio-Medical Engineering, Digital Signal Processing, Electrical Machines, Electro Mechanical systems,  Power Electronics, Power Systems, Real Time Systems, Embedded Systems, VLSI – ULSI systems, Wired and Wireless Communication systems and Modelling and Simulation. There were about 150 delegates attended the conference covering participation from industries, R&D establishments and academic institutions. All the technical research papers presented in the technical sessions were given importance for simulation driven intelligent control and automation. The delegates contributed their ideas and expertise to improve the efficiency and efficacy of the proposed systems and models to achieve better results under global environment.

           The valedictory function was held on 11th February 2006, at 4.00 pm. The valedictory address was delivered by  Dr. V. Palanisamy, Principal, Government College of Technology, Coimbatore. One paper on basic research and one application research paper were selected as best papers by the technical committee and awarded with cash prizes and certificates.
