Examination System

   The assessment of students' performance in theory subjects comprises of both internal evaluation (sessional marks) and performance in the end semester examination.

    Sessional marks are awarded on the basis of continuous evaluation of students' performance during the semester as detailed below :

Theory and project work :

Sessional marks                  :  25%

End Semester Examination  :  75%

Passing Minimum                :  50%   of the maximum marks at the End semester examination and 50% of the aggregate marks (End Semester and Sessional marks put together).

    The concerned teacher at the beginning of the semester indicates the various proportions for tests, assignments, attendance, projects etc.to award the sessional marks.  

Practicals  :        

    Continuous assessment is carried out in Laboratory practical, Workshop practice and Engineering graphics. The performance of student is evaluated continuously in  the Laboratory / Workshop / Drawing classes and marks are awarded.

     The passing minimum is 50%.

     A student who fails in Practical examination/Workshop/Drawing has to take a separate examination for 100 marks and the passing minimum is 50.

 

     Semester examinations are usually conducted in all the subjects of study in all the semesters both in November and April of the corresponding year.

 

Award of letter grades

    All assessments of a course are done on absolute marks and then converted into letter grade on a ten point scale as per the range of total marks.

" U " denotes failure un the subject .

" I " denotes incomplete due to lack of required attendance and hence prevention from writing the end semester examination.

" W " denotes  withdrawal from the examination due to sudden illness or accident.

 

Credit allotted for subjects :

    Each course is normally assigned certain number of credits.

  • One lecture period per week is 1 credit .

  • One tutorial period  per week is 1 credit.

  • Two periods of laboratory practical / seminar  for project is given 1 credit.

  • Three or Four periods of laboratory practical is given 2 credits.

The minimum number of credits required for passing B.E. / B. Tech. course is about 200.

 

The Grade Point Average ( GPA) is calculated using the formula

 

                     GPA = sum of  [C  x GP] / sum of C

 

where C is the credit for each subject and GP is the grade point awarded for the subject.

 

Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) is calculated in a similar way taking into account all the semesters.

 

Provision For Withdrawal From Examination :

  1. A candidate may, for valid reasons, be permitted to withdraw from appearing for the examination in any course or courses of only one semester examination during the entire duration of the degree programme. Also only one application for withdrawal is permitted for that semester examination in which withdrawal is sought.

  2. Withdrawal application shall be valid only if the candidate is otherwise eligible to write the examination and if it is made within the prescribed number of days prior to the commencement of the examination in that course or courses and also recommended by the Head of the Department and the Head of the Institution.

  3. Withdrawal shall not be construed as an appearance for the eligibility of a candidate  for First Class with Distinction.

Passing Requirements :

  1.  A candidate who secures not less than 50% of the total marks prescribed for the courses with a minimum marks specified for individual theory subjects at the end semester examinations shall be declared to have passed the examination.

  2. A candidate who qualifies for the award of degree having passed the examination in all the subjects of all the eight semesters (six semesters for lateral entry) in his / her first appearance within eight consecutive semesters (six for lateral entry) securing a CGPA of not less than 8.00 shall be declared to have passed the examination in FIRST CLASS WITH DISTINCTION.

  3. A candidate who qualifies for the award of degree having passed the examination in all the courses in the final six semesters (all the six semesters for lateral entry) within a maximum period of eight consecutive semesters after his / her commencement of study in the third semester ( from first semester for lateral entry ) securing a CGPA of not less than 6.50 shall be declared to have passed the examination in FIRST CLASS.

  4. All the candidates (not covered in clauses who qualify for the award of degree (vide clause 6) shall be declared to have passed the examination in SECOND CLASS.

  5. A candidate can apply for transparency and / or revaluation of his / her semester examination answer paper in a theory course, within two weeks from the declaration of results, and on the dates specified by the Controller of Examinations on payment of a prescribed fee through proper application through the Controller of Examinations. The Controller of Examinations shall arrange for revaluation and the result shall be published soon after revaluation is completed.
