One Day Seminar On

Disaster Management

       A one day seminar on " Disaster Management" was held at Coimbatore Institute of Technology, here on Friday jointly organised by the department of Civil Engineering and Industry Institute Partnership cell, CIT. Disasters like Earthquakes, flood and cyclone present a major threat to sustainable development. Therefore it necessitates, research methodology and development of disaster management in our country, including disaster management models, technical awareness and training programme on disaster mitigation and the methods to estimate the risk and hazard. This was the objective behind this seminar on Disaster Management, says Mr. M. Kalaiarasu, Lecturer in Civil Engineering and the coordinator of this seminar.

 

 

      Mr. Karunakaran, District Revenue officer, Coimbatore inaugurated the seminar and addressed the student delegates and the faculty members from technical institutions. Dr. R. Prabhakar, Principal, Coimbatore Institute of Technology presided over the inaugural function. The welcome address was delivered by Dr. K. Subramanian, Professor and Head of Civil Engineering.

 

       In the forenoon session of the seminar, a lecture on " Disaster Risk Management" was delivered by Mr. V. G. Rajkumar, Project officer, UEVRP, Disaster Management & Mitigation. He impressed the delegates by his scintillating speech covering the basic issues of Disasters and Hazards. A short movie on the " Tsunami attack in Nagapattinam" was included in his presentation.

 

      The afternoon session was handled by Dr. K. Subramanian, Professor and Head of Civil Engineering, who delivered a lecture on "Earthquake effects and Basic Principles of Seismic Design". His lecture included the entire A to Z basics of seismic design and few case studies which was thought provoking.

 

    About 120 delegates including Corporation Engineers, Practicing Engineers, Teachers from Engineering colleges and Students participated in this event.
